Dear students,
Following recent incidents in student accommodations, we would like to draw your attention to the rules for sublet and give advice. If you’re considering subletting, please make sure to follow these guidelines to avoid any issues:
- It is your responsibility to contact your landlord (e. g. Studierendenwerk, WBG, IWG, ...) and obtain their permission before subletting your room.
- This note applies to the dorms owned by Studierendenwerk: We strongly recommend that you sublet only to other students to help maintain campus security and avoid the entry of external persons into student accommodations. Studierendenwerk might ask for an enrolment certificate from your subtenant, as well.
- Once approved, make sure that everything is formalized with a legal subletting contract. As it is a legal document, it is supposed to be in German.
- Please be aware that if your landlord finds out you sublet your room without informing them, there could be serious consequences, including the termination of your rental contract.
We recommend following these steps to ensure a smooth and safe process. We drafted two templates for a sublet contract (limited/unlimited) which you can use and adapt to your particular conditions. Feel free to reach out to us in case of any doubts or queries. Please also let us know if your landlord rejects your request for sublet. In such cases, it is possible to seek advice from the tenants' association.
Many greetings
Your department of international affairs (StuRa)
